Surfing North Portugal
Want to know all there is to know about longboard surfing in the North of Portugal? Given Portugal’s unique geographical location and its plus 600 km of exposed coast, it nearly goes without saying that there are plenty of surf regions for you to discover. This time we have chosen North Portugal.
We have been surfing during the last weekend in the region and we would love to share with you the best surfing spots around Viana do Castelo for longboard passionates.
Portugal is an incredibly beautiful destination for travellers looking to book a surf vacation in Europe.
One of the reasons why it’s so popular in addition to its great reputation for surf is its dry Mediterranean climate, which provides mild winters, hot summers and 2.5 to 3.2 thousand hours of sunshine a year. Portugal is also easy to visit given that it’s part of the European Union (EU). This means EU can enjoy open borders and not have to worry about exchanging money, since its official currency is also the Euro.
Starting our surf trip in Viana do Castelo we arrived to Afife. Located around 10 km North from Viana, Afife is a wild beach that works as its best with East winds and West and North West swells. You can find waves pretty much all year round with peaks for all levels. Afife is a beach break with some nice peaks for longboard surfers. If you wonder which is the best tide to surf there, well, good news, all tides work in Afife 🙂
But there many other surfing spots nearby such as Vila Praia de Ancora, Moledo, Esposende and of course the popular Cabedelo, near Viana do Castelo.
Cabedelo is located right in front of Viana do Castelo’s port towards the South. It offers a nice long wave thanks to its dam. It also works very well all year round with West and North West swell and East winds.
After surfing we enjoyed the cozy city of Viana do Castelo with a good vinho verde and grilled fish as Portuguese do 🙂
